Pennsylvania has the highest number of cases of Lyme disease in the country, according to reports from the CDC. With more than 500 species of ticks worldwide, 25 of those species live in Pennsylvania. Of these 25 reported species, four are the most commonly found in our area:
The American dog tick is responsible for being a carrier of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and are frequently found on dogs, hence the name. After feeding, the American dog tick can actually become the size of a grape and is the most commonly found tick in Pennsylvania.
The blacklegged tick is found in wooded, brushy areas and is a vector for Lyme disease. While adult blacklegged ticks prefer to feed on deer, humans can make a great meal in a pinch. If you find a blacklegged tick on your person, remove it as soon as you possibly can. This species of tick requires in excess of 24 hours of attachment before it can transmit Lyme dieases.
While commonly found in the Texas area, hence the name, there have been reports of the Lone Star Tick in our area-- especially in more urban areas. The Lone Star tick is a more common vector of Rocky Mountain Spotted fever and tick paralysis than Lyme disease.
While Punxsutawney Phil is a more common host for the groundhog tick than you or your furry friends, groundhog ticks have been known to make a meal out of humans. While scary to find in your yard, you are unlikely to contract any diseases from a groundhog tick.
